Walker Commons
Walker Commons is a 56-unit apartment complex located at 678 Buttonwillow Lane (between Palmetto and Vallombrosa Avenues adjacent to the Park Plaza Shopping Center on Mangrove Avenue) in Chico.Walker Commons is a senior complex providing affordable housing to elderly (55 and older) and/or disabled persons who meet the income and selection criteria. The selection guidelines are based upon financial responsibility and behavior history.
Walker Commons is not a conventional public housing project; it does, however, utilize some public funds. It is the result of a joint venture between the Housing Authority of the County of Butte, the City of Chico, and other investors. It is controlled by a 7-member Board of Directors under the title of Butte County Affordable Housing Development Corporation (BCAHDC), a non-profit corporation.
The rent structure for Walker Commons is based upon a median income for one person for this Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) published annually in the Federal Register. There are 3 rent tiers based upon the median income with a specified number of units for each rent level.
Applicants who also have a Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8 voucher) may be eligible to apply that voucher toward their rent at Walker Commons.
The rents are as follows:
11 units at $327/month |
23 units at $492/month |
22 units at $602/month |
Section 8 vouchers are accepted. A Full Contract Rent for Section 8 participants will be at Fair Market Rent or $634/mo.
Units are approximately 580 square feet. Water, sewer and garbage are provided. A community building and laundry facilities are on site. The units are accessible for most disabilities. However, they do not have roll-in showers.
